Joyce,
If you are close to a Mormon (LDS) Library, go there, and get or order the
1850 Census Index of Virginia to see if there is a Patrick Johnston in it.
Be sure to copy down any other members of his families listed. You need
then to order the actual Census, as well as the Index. It should show
Patrick within a family group, and also where he was born, etc. (Lots of
info there.) The index will probably have more than one Patrick Johnston,
too.
I am just assuming he was new in this country when he got to VA (probably
came in around Washington, DC?) as he seems to be a city boy. When you find
the port of arrival, there should be more info in the Natl. Archives in
Washington, about immigrants that late.

Probably he went to NYC looking for a job, and probably had relatives who
were already there. It would be helpful if you could find out what kind of
a job he worked at, I think.

PS Do you think I could be the "Dear Abby" of genealogy?

born 1859 in NYC. Found Joseph in 1920 census, with son from another wife,
John M. Joseph is listed as father and mother being born in Ireland. Oral
family history has Patrick coming to NY from VA. any clues?
