HI Al, what part of IOWA were your Johnston's from? Mine came and lived in Cedar County, then moved to California. They were from Midlothian Scotland and Edinburgh.

This appears typical of the movement of the Ulster Scots. My line
started in Prince William County, VA then to Hardy County(now WV) and on to
the middle west. My Grandfather, the second of the James Bishop Johnston's
was born and married in IL, moving to IA and ultimately to NE. My Father
and I were both born in NE but service in both WW II and Korea got me all
over the country and I am now retired in MD.
If I ever get the time I am going to try to develop the Johnston
migration pattern from Ulster/Scotland/etc to the Colonies.
