"Aug. 3, 1886.
Got an Austin paper reporting the death of Major Johns.  They gave him a very
exalted character as a man and citizen.  He was 70 years old and prominent in
Texas for many years."

The "Major Johns," mentioned above in the JJJ dairy, was Clement Read Johns
of Austin, TX. John Jay Johns visited Major Clement R. Johns earlier in 1886
while on a trip to Texas. He noted in his diary that they were cousins, as
their grandfathers had been brothers.

John Jay Johns was the grandson of John Johns of Buckingham Co., VA and
Clement R. Johns was the grandson of William Johns Jr. of Buckingham Co. The
Johns brothers of Buckingham Co. both married into the Glover family and
their wives were cousins.

Clement Read Johns was born in Rutherford Co., TN to John Johns and Mary Nash
Bedford. He and his brothers, Stephen Bedford Johns and Edmund Glover Johns,
moved from Rutherford Co. to Texas as young men.
