Kate and Joe,
It's miserably hot outside, I'm in a cool cellar with my computer, so I
thought I'd add a bit more to the discussion (it'll be a couple of more days
before I go outside !!). I went to my Discovery map 38, and looked at the
Tagheen church location. I had annotated, on my map, next to it - "Donovan -
Nothing of interest". This refers to Donovan's "Antiquities of the County
Mayo" (actually, a MUCH longer title) from 1838. I went to the pages I had
copied from this book when I had borrowed it from a library a year or so ago,
but found only the Index reference to the "Old Church". I'm not sure, but I
would guess that in 1838, this church was already non-functioning. The pages
from this two volume tome of Donovan's which I copied, were strictly related
to my interests - Early Christian and some Medieval sites. Recent churches
(since the 1500's) don't interest me.
Nevertheless; the location of this Tagheen church on the Disc. map places it
so close to the border between Tagheen East and Tagheen West (based on
Townland Index maps), that I can't be sure which of the townlands is the site
of the church. Likewise, I'm not sure that that particular "chapel" was in
use at that time (don't know the year corresponding to "gg-grandparents"). I
have a feeling that the term "Tagheen chapel" may have referred to a newer
church, but representing the parish of Tagheen .............and located in
the townland of Carrowmore (your reference to Carramore), less than a mile N
of Tagheen (still in the civil parish of Tagheen). There is an existing RC
church and school there, and that would seem a good place to inquire. I'm
not sure which post office the church in Carrowmore uses for it's mail.
Carrowmore is about 4 miles SSE of the town of Mayo, or 3 miles NNE of
Hollymount, or 4 miles WSW of Claremorris. These all have post offices. I
don't have a clue what the name of the church is, and I'm only partially
confident that it is located in the RC Parish of Crossboyne and Ta(u)gheen
(one of my RC parish maps is obviously wrong), Archdiocese of Tuam, but can't
find the Diocese from the Tuam website (essentially no information there).
I'm sure others will know. In any case, I think the RC church in Carrowmore,
Tagheen Parish, would be a good place for you to start. All of these
words.......and that's about the only recommendation I can give. Ohhhhhh, I
prefer the rain and wind and cool temps I enjoyed in Connaught six weeks ago
to the oppressive heat here. Ireland has my kind of weather !!!!!
That's it for now.
