>From a variety of source John Joseph Carroll was born June 20 or 24, 1856 to
Francis J and Mary (Howley) Carroll. Places of birth in Sligo were given as
Parish of Castle Conmore ?, Eniscrone and or Ballina. He left Ireland or
reached US on 9/22/1866. He was ordained Dec 18, 1879 by Bishop McInerny of
Albany, NY. He joined the Chicago diocese in 1878 and came to Chicago
1/1/1880.

Carroll was also a Gaelic scholar. He wrote a history of Ireland in Gaelic.
I 'm not sure of the intended readership level of the work and he wrote at
least one monograph on Irish grammar which used to be on the shelf some
years ago at DePaul University. He also penned "The Story of the Lance."
Unsure of the language in which it was written.

Mary Carroll died about October 19, 1895
