Father Carroll an assistant at Holy Name Cathedral was named the first resident pastor at St. Laurence at 72nd and Dorchester in 1885. Durung his tenure as pastor, he built the mission church of St. Leo at 79th and Normal. In 1887 he became pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle in Hyde Park. He was still pastor there at the time of his death. While he was pastor there, he introduced the custom of preaching in Gaelic at a speciak Mass on March 17th.
