Two Chicago Irish families------------Melody and Burke
I found their stories fascinating, so I just kept reading!

Chicago Tribune Mar 17 1899

Note the Melody family were the owners of the Melody farm in Lake
the country estate of J Ogden Armour.

ANTHONY BURKE, Chicago, died of appendicitis
yesterday at his home, 3356 Vernon Avenue.
He was a contractor and builder. Among the large
edifices he constructed were: HOLY ANGELS CHURCH

He was born in Co GALWAY Ireland in 1860(?)
and was educated at Trinity CollegeDublin.
He came to this city in 1880 and after working
with many contracting companies he became a
member of the firm of FOX & BURKE.
In 1893 he retired from the firm and soon
built up a large business of his own.
He left a widow and two young children.
Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed.

held at the home of the parents, No 3118 Prairie avenue.
Mr and Mrs Burke left for a trip East and will be home Tusdays in

1910 Census Nellie, age 42, lived at 4901 Calumet, with her widowed
father Thomas, age 68.
at with her 2 children Mead 15 and Melody 13.
Thomas was an contractor's accountant..

In 1900 Nellie Burke was also living with her parents (Mother Ellen,
born Canada Aug 1849, was alive in 1900.
The Melody family was living at 311? Prairie.
Mead Burke was born Sep 17 1894, Melody May 1896. Nellie was born
(IL) Aug 1867.

Ellen died in Gletsch, Switzerland on Aug 2.1909 A funeral was held
in Chicago Aug 20

THOMAS R MELODY 4901 Calumet avenue, a resident of Chicago since 1857
died on Saturday in his 70th year. He is survived by two sons,
the Rev John W Melody, a professor in the Catholic University at
Paul Melody and two daughters, Mrs Nellie Melody Burke and
Genevieve Melody
The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 1030 o'clock at St
James Church

1910-1920 Nellie became a court probation officer.

In 1920 she was living at ?5041 Grand Ave. age 48
employed as a probation officer at the courts.
Her children were both living with her.
Son, Mead 25, was an oil salesman
Dau, Melody, 23 was a stenoghrapher for a warehouse.

In 1930, age 62, whe was living at ?5859 Kimbark,
with her daughter, Melody age 33, single, employed as a typist.
(Melody married a Edward Page between 1930 and 1934.

By 1930 Mead had become a physician and was married to a Wisconsin
physician, Myra.
(Myra T. Emery b 20 Feb 1896).
They were living on Forest St in Kendall Wisconsin in 1930.
He had graduated from the Univ Wisconsin/Madison on June 20, 1917

He died in Madison in 1973.

Nellie died in 1934.

Funeral services for Mrs Nellie Melody Burke, 67 Years old, 1640
East 68th St
who died Wednesday, will be held at 9am today from the parlors at
1506 E 67th St.
to St Laurence Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Until her retirement in 1931, Mrs Burke was for 20 years probation
officer for
the Juvenile Court. She was born in Chicago and was a grand-daughter
of THOMAS MELODY. Mr Melody and his brothers, Patrick and Michael,
were the original owners, by government grant, of the Melody farm in
Lake Forest
for many years the country estate of J Ogden Armour.
Mrs Burke was the widow of Anthony Burke, who died in 1911.
She is survived by a daughter Mrs Edward Page and a son, Dr Meade Burke
of Madison Wisconsin. A brother, Paul Melody of Highland Park, also
She was a sister of the late Msgr John Webster Melody, and the late
Genevieve Melody, former principal of Calument High School.

Supt William McAndrew yesterday announced the nomination of Miss
GENEVIEVE MELODY to the principalship of Calumet High School to
succeed Willis Towers, who is recommended for appointment as a
district superintendent. If approved, Miss Melody will be the
first woman principal of a high school in Chicago having boys and girls
Miss Melody was educated in the public schools here and graduated
from the University of Chicago. She holds the degree of bachelor and
master of philosphy, and is also a graduate of Kent College of Law
She is 52 years old and has been in the school system for thirty years.


Miss Genevieve Melody, principal of Calumet High School, 8132 So May
Street, died in Gothenburg, Sweden, last Saturday, according to a
gram received by her brother, Paul Melody, of Highland Park. She had
been suffering from a heart ailment.
Miss Melody was appointed principal of Calumet High School in 1925
the first principal of a co-educational high school in Chicago. She
a graduate of the University of Chicago and the Kent College of Law
She became a teacher in 1891. Four years later she was named head
of the history department at Chicago Normal college.
Born in Chicago, Miss Melody was 61 years old. he is survived by
her Highland Park brother and a sister, Nellie Melody Burke.
Miss Meldoy lived at 739 East 81st St.
