Tip: If you can't find your ancestor's marriage record in Cook County,
check records for Lake County, Indiana. Crown Point, the county seat of
Lake County, was the Midwest equivalent of Las Vegas wedding chapels from
1915 to 1940--no blood tests, no waiting, heavily advertised. The Index to
Marriage Records, Lake County, Indiana , 1805-1920 Inclusive is available at
the Newberry Library; the Lake County Public Library, Merrillville, Indiana;
and the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. For 1920 to
1940, contact the Recorder's Office in the Lake County courthouse in Crown
Point. This office also has the marriage applicatrions. Keep in mind,
though, that people who got married in Crown Point were often eloping or
throwing others off their tracks, so the information they provided should be
viewed critically and verified with other documentation."
