Hopkins, John P., mayor of Chicago, was born one of twelve children
of John Hopkins and Mary Flynn, 38 years ago. When 13 yrs. old he
began to learn the machinist trade serving 2 1/2 years apprenticed to
the David Bell Co. He then entered the commercial field on the docks
of Buffalo, NY. He came to Chicago in 1880 and was employed by the
Pullman Co. and advanced rapidly from one position to another. In the
year 1885 he started a store in the Arcade Bldg. and organized the
Arcade Trading Co. He held a position in the management of the
World's Fair of 1893. He was elected Mayor of Chicago upon the
assasination of the elder Carter Harrison. He lives with his mother
and sisters in a handsome house on Michigan Blvd. -March 17, 1906


Note:
One 1918 obit listed him as age 60. which would give a birth year of
1858.
This notice --38 in 1906 --would give a birth year of 1868.
