Re: Chicago Directories

Cook County was divided into townships in 1850 and the township
immediately south of Chicago was the Town of Lake. The Town of Lake
existed until 1891 when it was annexed to the City of Chicago so
anyone living or having a business south of 39th street won't be in
the Chicago Directories until 1891. The dividing line to the north
was 39th Street and the line to the south was 87th Street. The line
to the west was Cicero Avenue. Beyond Cicero was the Town of Lyons.

If you wish to review the "Town Of Lake" Directories for 1885-1889
they are available in the Lawrence J. Gutter Collection of Chicagoana
at The Daley Library at University of Illinois, Chicago Circle campus
in the west Loop. Not open on weekends but best to check.
