I had relatives who came down from Canada and went to DeKalb County
(probably to Chicago and then by train to DeKalb), then to South Dakota by the 1890s.
The naturalization information is that they crossed over and came thru
Detroit approx 1866 or thereabouts. I would think many traveled by water to
Chicago. I don't have a map to look at, so don't know if there is one waterway
thru the Great Lakes.
