William M. Devine former city treasurer, well known dairyman and one
of the wealthiest and most eccentric real estate owners in Chicago,
died yesteday at this home, 4 East Huron St.

At one time he owned a large part of Rogers Park, and at the time of
his death still held most all of the property
along Sheridan Rd between Greenleaf and Lunt Avenues.
His holdings are estimated at between $1,000,000 and $2,000,000.

Mr Devin was born in COUNTY CAVAN, Ireland, Sept, 18, 1844, and came
to Chicago in 1863.

Just before the time of the World's Fair, forseeing the march of the
city northward, Mr Devine obtained large holdings
in Rogers Park and added to these until he owned practically the
entire district.

Mr. Devine is survived by his widow, 4 sons and 4 daughters. Funeral
services will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow
morning at Holy Name Cathedral, of which he was a lay trustee for
twenty years. Burial will be at Calvary.

In the 1910 census he and his wife Catherine had been married 41 yrs.
(abt 1869) He was 65 and she was 61.
Catherine was also born in Ireland. She emigrated in 1863.

the were 10 children 8 living according to this 1910 census.
