Subject: [IRISH-IN-CHICAGO] List of Chicago Irishmen in Mulligan's Brigade,Company "B"
Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2006 23:48:13 +0000

The following list of Chicago residents who served in Col. James A. Mulligan's 23rd Illinois Infantry (Mulligan's Brigade) was compiled using the Illinois Adjutant General's muster rolls along with the online website: Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls Database http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/datcivil.html
which besides giving place of residence and nativity of each soldier, also gives a physical description.

It should be noted that Company "B" was formed in June 1861 from Chicago's Montgomery Guards, an early Irish military organization formed in response to the rise of the Know-Nothings. Ironically it was this same organization (made up entirely of Irish immigrants) that was called upon in 1855 to help quell the Lager Beer Riots brought about by a Know-Nothing mayor's attempt to tax the City's German beer halls. (For more information about this event see John J. Flinn's HISTORY OF THE CHICAGO POLICE, 1886)

As late as 1893, in a newspaper article entitled "The Irish Element," THE NEW WORLD noted,

"The [Montgomery Guards] Company numbers 79 men rank and file, and drill every Wednesday and Saturday evening at their armory in Loyd's Building...The Captain was Michael Gleason, who deserved much of the credit for the company's reputation as the best Irish company in the Northwest."
