GREAT CHICAGO FIRE SURVIVOR IS DEAD AT 99
Mass for Mrs. Eleanor Toomey Kavanagh, 99, who was born on the west
side and often recalled the great fire of 1871, will be said at 11
a.m. Monday in St. Ignatius' church died Thursday.
Mrs. Kavanagh, of 2440 Lakeview av., was baptized in 1859 by the Rev.
Arnold Damen, the Jesuit priest who was founder and first pastor of
Holy Family church. Her family had prepared to evacuate their home in
the great fire, but the flames stopped two blocks away. She was the
widow of Joseph Francis Kavanagh, an architect who died in 1919.
Surviving are three sons, Joseph F. Jr., Charles J., and William
P.;two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Murray. and Mrs. Eleanor K.
O'Brien; 15 grandchildren, two of whom are Jesuit priest; and 26
