I wonder if any of these old records tell who James purchased the land from?
I've never looked into anything like this myself (I have ancestors from IN
also who purchased land-just haven't gone that far yet). Well, as I was
typing I pulled up the image, and see that it was signed by Pres.VanBuren
and no other name appears as a seller. I guess it was unowned land to be
bought. Well, that doesn't help much, I was hoping to be able to search
another name to see if DENEND's name might be nearby.

It seems, prior to the Nov.1837 purchase in Huntington Co, James also
purchased land in Hamilton Co, IN Aug.1837:
