THE SHENANDOAH GAZETTE. March 10, 1936. "Magel Bros. Purchase Land". -- Magel Brothers have purchased the south eighty acres of land of the Jarman estate four mile east of Sidney for $125 an acre, or a total of $10,000. This is one of the best prices paid for land in this section recently.
The Magels have also purchased the land known as Otte Lake, near the river from the Otte's, and are making efforts to reclaim the land which is quite swampy. Dikes are being built along each side of the land.
Samuel Carter will reside on the farm now occupied by Ed Jarman and family.
N.B.: Many earlier maps of Fremont county showed Otte Lake as a physical feature, located east of Sidney along the present highway. Don Magel rode to Sidney high school with the Farwell's, and we noted how much new fill was in this Magel settling basin, after each time the West Nishnabotna flooded.....The Jarman's lived about a quarter of a mile west of Sunnyside county school where the Gardners, Jarmans, Woodlands, Proctors, Farwells, attended school under Mrs. Grace Watts (of Sidney) and Miss Florence Paddock (of Percival).......While the Carters were living in Prairie township on this farm, the stork was expected just any day. Ruth (?) was to hang a white flag on the barn if the stork was coming. The stork did, she did, but her husband DID NOT, and mother was left by herself. Imagine his surprise when he realized his family had increased by one while he was out working in the field!-- W.F.
