Ruth, You will see these initials on various census' regarding immigration
status. Al, (alien) Pa. (petition applied [for]) and Na, (naturalized) The
naturalization was a 2 step process. After a person had been here for a
certain period of time, he would file his Pa. This is the one you want to
obtain for it MAY contain his port of entry, date, and perhaps a residence
in his birth country. Remember, I said MAY. Then, after a period of about 2
years, he could file his final, or naturalization papers Which usually only
gives his name and that he renounces allegiance to the king or queen of his
native country. This does not have to be done at one place. He could arrive
in NY, move to Ohio, file his Pa, and then move to Iowa and file his final
papers. Dick
