Subject: Announcement: NARA changes policies for microfilm

Ok, this was sent to me through one of my lists for archivists. NARA has some
really great microfilm that you can purchase and rent from them. Below 2
changes than NARA has made to their policies (1 for the better! other is a
price increase for purchases). Then there are some links from me, I had kind
of a hard time finding where to order their films and stuff, so at the bottom
will be some links so you don't have to fish around the site :). Good luck all
with your research! This should be the last of the posts like this from me for
awhile! Sorry for the increased amount you've received from me lately, but
they'll die down now :)

NARA Announces Changes in Microfilm Policies: The National
Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has announced two major
changes to their microfilm policies. First, microfilm is now available
for ordering online. On 12 September 2005, NARA added their microfilm
publications catalog to "Order Online!" which serves as a secure way to
research and request reproductions and materials. For the first time,
researchers can view the microfilm catalog online to obtain full
descriptions of what is offered, review and download pamphlets and roll
lists, find out if an item is for sale or for rent, and purchase items
with a credit card. For more information, visit
http://www.archives.gov/research/order/orderonline.html .
Secondly, NARA has announced that in order to keep up with costs, prices
for microfilm will be raised. Effective 1 October 2005, the price of
National Archives black-and-white microfilm will be $65 per roll ($68
per roll for foreign orders). Color microfilm will be $82 per roll ($85
for foreign orders). Microfiche prices will not be affected. NARA
currently operates 19 regional records facilities across the United
States, in addition to 11 Presidential libraries. Please visit
www.archives.gov for more information.
This is my note:
-This page offers general information about their microfilm holdings:
http://www.archives.gov/research/formats/microfilm.html
-This page may *look* like a place to request orders, but continue to the next
screen and you'll see this is their catalog of available titles. I suggest
using the advanced search or if that doesn't turn up anything for you, to
browse all their microfilm.
http://www.archives.gov/research/order/orderonline.html?microfilm
-This page to see the pricing schedule for film rentals. If you use their
online catalog, it will tell you if you can rent the film instead of having to
purchase it.
