I became acquainted with John Hupp when he first moved to Carroll CountyIowa in the fall of 1863, and I was -- acquainted with him from thattime to the time of his death, having been a close neighbor of his mostof this time. When I first became acquainted with said John Hupp he wasan old man and unable to do much work. His family at home during thattime was a wife & daughter. The first year I know him he lived on asmall rented farm. He had 40 acres of land and a team and no otherproperty that I knew of and in 1865 he had 7 or 8 acres broke in his farmand built thereon a small cabin which he moved into. During the winterof 1865-6 he went to Panora Mills (a distance of 30 miles) for flour mealfor his family and was overtaken by a severe snowstorm and was so badlyfrozen as to be totally disabled for several months. He had 10 acresmore of his land broke up in 1866. He was unable to get the balance ofhis land in cultivation. In the spring of 1868, he was kicked by a hor!
sefrom the effects of which he never recovered. Since the whole time Iknew the said John Hupp he was largely dependent for support of himselfand family upon his neighbors and friends. He died in June 1871. He was68 years old at the time of his death.
