HUPP, PIONEER LAID TO REST
Settled at old Carrollton sixty five years ago.
ODD FELLOW 40 YEARS
Funeral was attended by host of friends
John W. Hupp, Pioneer resident of Carroll county, passed away at the homeof his son, Jesse, in the Glidden neighborhood last Sunday.
Mr Hupp was indeed a pioneer coming to this country at the age of 13 in1864. Practically all of his life was spent int the vicinity of OldCarrollton and he was held in high esteem by the host of friends whom heenjoyed.
The funeral was held Tuesday at Old Carrollton, Rev. Dirks of the UnitedBrethren Church of Ralston having charge of the services. Memebers ofthe Odd Fellows Lodge of which Mr. Hupp had been a member over 40 yearsacted as Pallbearers.
The funeral was one of the largest ever held at that place, the highesteem with which Mr. Hupp was regarded is shown by the fact that many threashing rigs in that vicinity were silent that crews might attend thefuneral.
The obituary as read by Rev. Dirks at the services follows:
John W. Hupp passed Sunday morning, July 27, at the home of his son Jesse, after an illness of four months. During this illness he was bedfast with the exception of two weeks. He was a very patient suffurer and was ready to depart from this world as he expressed to his friends and loved ones many times. He was born in Noble county Ohio July 14,1849. At the time of his passing he was 79 years and 12 days.
He was the second child of Isaac and Elizabeth Hupp. At the age of thirteen he moved to Iowa with his parents, and settled in the vicinityof Carrollton, Carroll county, Iowa, where he lived most of his life. He was a great lover of nature, his greatest pleasure being hunting and fishing in the early days when wild game was more plentiful.
He was one of the oldest settlers in Carroll county. In the early days he was employed in the first barber shop and the first butcher shop in the town of Carroll. During the time the Chicago North Western railroad was being built he supplied the crew with meat, hauling it with a team of oxen from Jefferson to Denison. [Bill Cody was in charge of getting food to the railroad workers. NHH]
In the year of 1872 he was united in marriage to Narcissus Sigler, daughter of John and Rachel Sigler. Mrs. Hupp preceded him in death,January 27, 1929, exactly one year and six months before his death. Of their seven children three have precedded him in death, they are:Virginia who died July 26, 1884; Nellie May, August 22, 1879, Cora Belle Young, December 5, 1919. He leaves to mourn his death three sons and one daughter they are: Emanuel, of Spirit Lake, Jesse of Glidden, William of Fort Crook, Nebraska, and Mrs. Anna Andrews of Chicago; one brother,Seph Hupp, of Bloomfied, Nebraska, and one sister, Mrs. Alice Jefferson of Sioux City; Twenty grandchildren and five great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Came by covered wagon to Carroll Co. IA when he was 13 years old. Hauled venison with oxen team from Jefferson to Denison to feed the men building the railroad. Bill Cody was in charge of getting buffalo meat to the RRbuilders. Worked in first livery stable, first barber shop, and first butcher shop in Carroll County.
Grandpa Hupp worked at the first livery stable in Carroll county (OldCarrollton), so was hired by Crockett Ribble to take him (and maybe others) up to Bob Dickson farm northeast of Glidden to challenge Bob to a fight over changing court huse records from Old Carrollton to Carroll City. The records were sneaked out during the night. Anyhow, Bob said he had to do his chores first. After the chores were done, Bob beat Crockett in the fight. Then he insisted they all come in and eat dinner with him.
I talked to Daryl Thiede, a historian of Carroll Co and Iowa, and he said one of the Glidden Bell boys told him the same story.
