Thank you so very much for your reply. You found a lot of information. Is it likely since Dr. James Holms Howie and Mary took the banns in Row, Dunbartonshire that his father,Dr. Alexander Howie was originally from Row? Would their sons' birth records indicate where the parents were from so that I can find Dr. Alex Howie's parents? and Agnes Holms' also?
I have looked at Scotland's people and find many Alexander Howie's about his age. I originally thought he was born abt. 1808 but if he took a chemistry class at Univ. of Glasgow in 1819 then presumably he was born earlier than 1808. I have heard that the Howies in Scotlands descend from three French brothers Huie and I am not sure from which line my husband's Howie's descend, but that would also be interesting to know. They seems to be from a line of doctors. I have recently purchased The Scots Worthies- Howie of Lochgoin and find it fascinating. Any help would be appreciated.
