Hello,
I am still trying to track down my elusive Grandfather:
David KAHANA
b. 25/26 February 1894/95
d. 31 December 1952
I believe in 1910 he was living in Olaa, and possibly working in the Sugar
Mill of the same name (still trying to confirm this, but I do believe this is
him). Family story states that he was a Merchant Marine (1st Class Seaman and
1st Class Rigger). I have check the Seafarers International Union here in
Philadelphia, no luck.
I am now wondering if maybe he enlisted in the Merchant Marines while
still living in Hawaii, and maybe that was how he arrived in Philadelphia?
So - Is there a Merchant Marine Union (?) in Hawaii, maybe somewhere in
the Puna District or maybe even Hilo (family story is Grandpop Dave left
Hawaii from Hilo). Would the Olaa/Puna Sugar Mill had any ships that would have
been used by the Merchant Marines?
Any ideas, or suggestions on how to proceed from here would be deeply
appreciated.
Thanks
Dee Kaelin Maialetti
