Aunt Delphia said he was killed near the end of the Civil War by "bushwackers" who thought he was shoeing horses for the opposite side (since bushwackers were generally of southern persuasion, I assume they thought he was aiding the Union side...Mo was a border state, but never ceded from the union) she said they cut his hands off first before they finally killed him ( guess their punishment was to cut off the offending parts, his hands that he had worked with, and who knows, he may have died from those wounds). She didn't know exactly where he was buried, probably on the family home site.

> A Wm Lackey reportedly died during the Civil War alongside my ancestor Charles Elliot Hart. They were civilians, and were hung, shot, hands cutoff.....whatever, according to who tells the story...yet almost all Hart researchers agree Charles Elliot Hart died at the hands of bush-whackers ..allegedly for shoeing the other side's horses. He was a blacksmith. Two other men also died..one the Lache or Lackey. Someone even told me the bushwhackers were Union deserters..and were tried in Ironton Federal Court...Great! I tried to find a record in the Federal courts at Ironton, but they were in the basement for those years..and were "too heavy to bring up." Tried the Ironton local newspapers..they are on microfilm starting AFTER the Civil War. Can't even find proof of where he is buried. Please let me know if you find your Lackey/Lache died at the hands of bushwhackers.

> Charles Elliot Hart was my husband's 3rd great grandfather. I have that he was born May 14, 1811, in Roane? County, TN. He died about 1864, in Shannon County, MO--believed to have been killed by bushwhackers. My information indicates that he was buried in the Dillard Cemetery in Shannon County. Some people say he was buried at Old Midco (also Shannon Co.) - actually its in Carter Co., just east of the Shannon Co. line and north of Rt. 60 at Van Buren. Albert Hart, Charles Elliot's son, is buried in the cemetery 1/2 mile east of the old Midco site - and I have heard the "old Dooley place"---obviously no-one knows for sure where he lies.

> My father told me his grandfather, James Calvin Hart, was forever bitter and soured by the murder of his father, Charles Elliot Hart, by Quantrell's? Raiders. His family's version had Charles Elliot being shot off the roof of his home and then 'drawn and quartered' in front of his family. This version had him as being either a blacksmith or gunsmith, maybe he was both? Another version says he was shot, hung and had his hands cut off. It is pretty evident that Charles met a very unsavory death during the civil war in one of the nastiest areas of the civil war for violence. Many different factions were prevalent here because of the lead and iron mines. A VERY important commodity to all of them. These various factions were 1. The Union army, 2. The Confederate army, 3. The Missouri Militia (northern allegiance), 4. The Missouri Militia (southern allegiance), 5. The Union's mercenaries, 6. The South's mercenaries, and 7. Numerous bands of unattached marauders/deserters !
