The current DNA results (to 31 July) that are posted at
http://www.hamiltongensociety.org/Hamilton_DNA_Results.htm
have identified ten different Hamilton lines. This means that there were at
least ten different initiating ancestors that eventually took the Hamilton
surname. This is certainly very possible since one suspects that, when
surnames came into common use around the 15th century in Lowland Scotland,
many people who worked for the aristocratic Hamilton family and lived near
the town of Hamilton, Scotland took the Hamilton surname. I suspect that as
more DNA results become available many further Hamilton lines will be
identified. For genealogical purposes, having so many Hamilton lines is a
plus, because knowing which line your DNA results match will allow you to
focus your research on areas where that line is known to have been and not
on areas where lines that do not match yours have been.
