Hello to all,
Having studied the dates and the available names, here's what seems to
be possible regarding the ancestry of Alexander Hamilton(who marr.
Sussanah Harrison):
Lord Claud Hamilton of Paisley, younger son of James, 2d Earl of Arran
and Duke of Chatelherault, b. 1543, d. 1621/2 married Margaret Seton.
They had(among others):
Sir Claud Hamilton of Schawfield(Scot.)Killeny and Teadane(Strabane, Co.
Tyrone, NI). He married Janet Hamilton of Eilstoun/Uldston and he d. in
1614 in Dublin. They had:
(1)Sir Wm Hamilton, the heir, b. 1604. d. 16 May 1662. Buried Baldony,
Gortin, Tyrone. From him descend the Hamilton baronets of Woodbrook.
(2)Alexander Hamilton, the second son, b.c. 1606-10. He is described in
1618 as having "been poorly provided for" out of his father's estates in
Scotland.
(3rd)Robert Hamilton
(4th)Claud Hamilton(both of these d.s.p. to the best of my knowledge)
As the second son, Alexander, was b.c. 1606-10, he is a likely candidate
to be the father of the Alexander Hamilton who was b. 4 Feb 1640,
Strabane(?)and who d. in 1693, and who marr. Susannah
Harrison(1642-1728). Plus, if Alexander, as the second son of Sir Claud
Hamilton of Schawfield, was so "poorly provided for" out of his
father's estate in 1618, it would not be much of a stretch at all to see
him forced down in the social scale to the level of a tenant farmer,
albeit a well-connected one, which would also tend to explain why his
descendants are not accounted for in the usual publications that trace
the British gentry and nobility.
It would be interesting indeed to see if one could locate this
Alexander Hamilton on the Hamilton rent rolls in Strabane, possibly in
the near vicinity of Baldony or Gortin(or Killeny or Teadane), for the
period around 1630-50. This is presuming that such rent rolls are still
in existence. And again, this is a conjecture only as the necessary
proofs are not yet at hand, and I welcome any and all constructive
criticism as well as any competing conjectures/theories.
Best regards to all,
