HAMILTON Sir Claude (1543-1621) of SCOTLAND married Margaret SETON
Subject: Sir Claude Hamilton (1543-1621)
From: "Paul B. Phelps" <>
Seeking information on the =descendants= of Sir Claude HAMILTON, Duke of
Abercorn, 1st Baron Paisley, b. 1543 at Hamilton, Renfrewshire
(Lanarkshire), SCT, d. 1621 apparently in SCT, m. 1 Aug 1574 at Castle
Niddry, Winchburg, West Lothian, SCT, to Margaret SETON
(c.1545-1616/17),
dau. of Sir George SETON, 5th Lord Seton, and his wife Isabell HAMILTON.

Sir Claude was a major undertaker in the Plantation of Ulster in 1610,
settling hundreds of kinsmen and followers on grants in the barony of
Strabane, county Tyrone, and elsewhere in Northern Ireland.He is said to
be the direct ancestor of many HAMILTON emigrants to America- details
of his descendants are sketchy. Sir Claude and Lady Margaret had eight
children, of whom three or four sons appear to have settled in Ulster:
* James HAMILTON (1575-1632), 1st Earl of Abercorn, inherited title and
lands and remained in Scotland, although two of his younger sons
appear to have settled in Ulster, namely --
+ Claude Hamilton (c.1605-1638), Baron Strabane; and
+ George Hamilton (c.1606-1679), 1st Baronet of Donalong (co. Tyrone?)
* John HAMILTON (c.1579-bef.1611), Sir Knight, d. in Letterkenny, co.
Donegal; * Claude HAMILTON (c.1581-1614), Laird of Shawfield (co.
Tyrone?) d. co. Dublin (his eldest son associated with Elieston, co.
Tyrone);
* George HAMILTON (c.1582-bef.1657), Laird of Greenlaw (co. Tyrone);
and * Frederick HAMILTON (c.1590-1647), Sir Knight, is associated with
Carrowrosse, co. Leitrim (his sons are associated with Newton-Stewart
and Ardstraw in co. Tyrone, as well as Dromahair in co. Leitrim);

The list of Scottish undertakers in 1611 confirms the following grants
in the barony of Strabane, co. Tyrone:
* Earl of Abercorn [the elder Claude], 3000 acres at Strabane &
Dunnalong;
* Sir C. Hamilton [Claude the son/?], 2000 acres at Eden & Killeny; and
* Sir G. Hamilton [George the son/?], 1500 acres at Largie
(Cloghogenall).

I would be grateful for any and all information or leads to information
on the above individuals and their descendants. My ultimate goal is to
identify the ancestors of John HAMILTON (c.1744-1810), who with his
brother William em. 1764 to Baltimore MD and later settled in PA and KY.
Collateral information is welcome, however, and will be shared with the
Hamilton National Genealogical Society for the use of other HAMILTON
researchers who likewise find themselves cut off from their Irish and
Scottish roots. I look forward to your replies.
