Hello, Thank you for going to that trouble. I do have all of this
information. I am not certain that Emma daughter of Joseph and Lydia is the
Emma one who married Charles QUARMBY even though the age matches. From
memory I think there is a Joseph HAIGH in Golcar who has a daughter Emma and
he definitely went on a visit to USA at some point in time.
They had a son born 1836 which appeared to me to be far too old. By 1901
(which is the only other census I found John in, he has reverted back to an
age which suggests he was born about 1849, in line with his marriage
certificate). However it is possible he lied on his marriage certificate
but then his wife's age isn't correct in 1881 either.
We weren't all that interested in ancestry when we were young and I can't
remember John's daughter Ruth Alice HAIGH (my husband's grandmother) ever
talking about her father and neither can my husband. I do have details of
her siblings etc. Robert Hugh HAIGH died in WW1. Alice was born in Wales,
the family seemed to move from Huddersfield to Wales and back again.
I have been trying to focus on my father's line of WOOD in Golcar because he
is still alive but John HAIGH has always intrigued me. I tried doing a
database with all the John HAIGH's I found in the Colne Valley to try an
elimination process but to be honest all I discovered was there are a lot of
them, they lived in the Colne Valley most of the time but sometimes people
moved to Lancashire or to nearby Yorkshire towns and even to Wales looking
for work. He and his father were weavers.
Sometimes just chipping away at odd clues does help and sometimes there may
be someone new on the list who has information. I did have ancestry.com
subscription for about a year which lapsed a while ago.
