You might try going to the courthouse where he was adopted from if you know the location.

I have some luck looking for my grandfather who was sent to an orphanage around the age of 7-10. Loysville. He was there for about 10 years and then his mother came and got him.

You might try checking around some of the orphanges located nearby and also talking to some of the older generation if there are any left who might be able to some of the history. Although I have found that most are reluctant to talk about things like this.
