I came across this information in researching my own Hackett line, perhaps it could assist you. Hackett is a very popular surname and is found in Irish, Scottish and English (Anglo-Saxon) culture. The meaning and origin of the Hackett surname is quite different depending on which country and culture it originates from. I also saw that there are three different Hackett Family Coat of Arms depending on if your Hackett family name is Irish, Scottish and British in origin.
(paraphrased from A Dictionary Of Surnames, Oxford Press 1988)
"Hackett 1. from the west Midlands of England, a diminutive of the surname Hake or Hack. 2. Scottish, a habitation name from the lands of Halkshead, where the Halkett Baronry was established in the 12th century 3. Irish, possibly established by William de Haket granted land there by King John in the early 13th century, the form Hackett first used in the 16th century."
There is far more detailed research into the origin of the Hackett name done by historians in all three of those countries than is given in that little defintion there. I hope some of this helps your research. Good luck.
