*According to "The Surnames of Ireland," by Edward MacLysaght, 6th edition:
"Hackett (Haiceid.) Families of this name have been in Ireland since the
Anglo-Norman invasion, mainly in Kilkenny and Kildare. A branch in Connacht
became completely hibernicized and was known as MacHackett and also as
Guckian. In Cos. Armagh and Tyrone Hackett has been used as a synonyn of
MacCahey, MacGahey and Gaggy from the sound of the Irish form Mag Eachaidh.
Mac Guckin, Guckian See MacGuigan and Hackett. Guckian is found in Co.
Leitrim. Also distinct as Mag Eochaidhin in Ulster."
Maybe one of his other books would have more about the Hackett surname.
