Hi, Ramona,
Sorry to be so long getting back to you. I've had a lot on my plate the last
2 weeks. Also, it took me a while to dig out my old information on the
"other" HACKETT's --- Cornelius, Lloyd, et. al.
I'll answer your last question first. I've always thought, as you do, that
the Elizabeth HACKETT who m. Moses CLINTON in 1797 was, indeed, the sister of
James HACKETT who m. Margaret COOK MASTIN in Shelby Co., in the same year. I
don't have any real proof, but it seems logical. I have no idea who their
parents might be. The fact that Elizabeth's consent was "given by herself" would
mean that she was of age and didn't need a father's, mother's or brother's
consent -- bad news for us, huh?!?
I agree with your assumption that Cornelius, Jesse, and Lloyd could be
brothers, and could also be the brothers of my James [Jr.] son of James HACKETT
[Sr.] and Margaret COOK MASTIN. They are all living in close proximity, and close
enough in age to be brothers. My James HACKETT [Jr.] age 44, with second
wife Malinda BALLEW, is found in Shelby Co., KY, in 1850, right across the county
line from your Franklin Co. HACKETT's.
About Cornelius, I found a copy of a letter, written by Mrs. V.A. Dinkle,
Catlettsburg, KY, June 25, 1945. This was in the HACKETT file at the Kentucky
Historical Society Library in Frankfort, KY.
In it she states that Cornelius is the son of James HACKETT and Margaret COOK
MASTIN. She also states that Cornelius married Mary Ann DUVALL, Nov. 25,
183?, [the last number in the year is cut off the copy.] I'm sure a search of
the marriage records will render the exact date.
I found another source for Cornelius' wife's name. Birth records for
Franklin Co. list a female child, Margaret HACKETT, b. Mar 20, 1861, father, Cormelus
[sic] HACKETT, mother Mary DUVALL. Souce: BMD card file, KY Hist. Soc.,
Frankfort, KY.
Another letter in the HACKETT file [KHS' response to Mrs. Dinkle's letters]
states that a Neill HACKETT was a "private in Company K of the Fifth KY
Infantry, Confederate Army. He enlisted Oct.12, 1862 at Frankfort, and died of
diseases during the Spring of 1863." Source: Roster of Kentucky Troops in the
Confederate Army, KY. Hist. Soc., Frankfort, KY.
I'm not sure if this the same Neill HACKETT. Our Cornelius would be 50 years
old, and a little old for the army, but possible. This is more likely a son
or nephew of Cornelius. Also, why would a 50-year-old man leave his wife and
1-year-old new baby daughter to go off and fight a war?
That's all I have for now. When I find more notes, I will pass them along.
I have information on Lloyd somewhere, but haven't found it yet.
Joyce
