Paula,

You don't say where in NC Colen HACKETT lived. Do you have a town or county?
If he were a younger brother, then he must have disappeared or died after
1910. Is it possible that there is a death certificate? I'm not sure what year
NC started registering deaths.

Have you checked to see if there are any newspapers available from that time
that might have a story on his disappearance, or even an obituary, if in fact
he died or was killed?

Have you checked the court records from that time to see if there is anything
about him there? Was he in a fight, arrested, etc.? Are there any records
of pauper's or unknown person's burials?

If he died, there should be a record somewhere. If, in fact, he just left
home for whatever reason, then he may have changed his name and moved
"who-knows-where". In that case, you may never find him.

I have a similar instance in my family. My mother's favorite [great-] uncle,
who was a preacher, left Franklin Co., KY, in about 1910-1915 to go live with
his sister in Texas. No one ever heard from him again. I've looked
everywhere for information, but so far I've found nothing. I figure he was probably
ambushed somewhere along the route, possibly robbed and killed, but that's only
speculation. Perhaps something like that happened to your Colen.

Coincidentally, my mother's uncle was also a HACKETT. His name was Preston,
nicknamed "Uncle Press" HACKETT.
