Subject: [HACKETT-L] Welcome Message for New Subscribers
Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2003 12:22:06 EDT

Hello Everyone,

Below is the "Welcome" message that I'll be sending to all new subscribers
while I'm the list admin. It is one that I use for my other lists. I thought
I'd send it to all of you, in case there are some list members who might
benefit from the suggestions.

If any of you have any suggestions for helping our members, especially the
"newbies", I'd welcome them. Please send them to me privately and I'll pass them
along.

Thanks, and good luck in your research.
Joyce

Welcome From The HACKETT List MOM

Welcome to the HACKETT-L discussion list. Our group is small but very
friendly and helpful. Please feel free to post your queries and or any information
you may wish to share. If you want to observe for a few days and just get the
"feel" of this list, that's OK, too.

But don't feel that you are being ignored if no one answers your post. It
just means that no one has found a connection at this time. Try posting your
message again later.

If you are new to the Internet, or to Mailing Lists, here are a few helpful
hints:

1. Make your Subject Line specific; i.e., Name, Place, Time Frame, etc..
Example 1: James HACKETT, b.abt 1806, KY
Example 2: HACKETT Marriages - Shelby Co., KY 1810-1850

Most people are subscribed to many lists, and only have time to briefly scan
the messages. You don't want the person who may be your best connection to
overlook or delete your message.

2. If you are replying to a message, be sure your reply relates to the
original message. If it is a different subject, change the subject line
accordingly.

3. This list is set up so that replies automatically go to the "list" rather
that to the "sender". That enables everyone to see the replies, which may
contain different information from that of the original post. If you wish to
reply privately to the "sender", remember to change the address before you click
on "send".

4. Also, this list is set up to receive messages that are posted to the
corresponding Rootsweb Message Board, in addition to messages posted by list
subscribers. But keep in mind, people who post to the MB are not necessarily
subscribed to the list. So if you want to be sure the person who posted the
message sees your response, you can reply directly to that person, or visit the
message board location [the URL is provided with the message] and post your reply
there.

5. It's very helpful if you capitalize all SURNAMES in the body of your
message. This helps people to quickly scan the entire message.

6. Limit your messages to one subject. Send separate messages, as many as
you like, for each separate subject.

This group is for the discussion of ALL possible spellings of the name
HACKETT, including HACKET, or any other possible variation.

If you need any help, or have any questions about this list, please feel free
to contact me directly. I wish you much success in your research.
