Sorry, I have forgotten to whom I am talking--is it Andrea or is it another Elizabeth?
Using your information, I have found Valentine Sr. living in Alton, IL, in 1910. Madison County, 1st ward of Alton township. NARA roll T624, #309, p. 52. Census sheet says
ED-16, sheet 15B (I think). The family of John W. Hackett is living at 823 Logan St, household 348/352. Valentine is 12. I cannot read John's occupation and can barely make out the places of birth. However, John is b NJ, parents NJ. I leave it to you to get whole record.
I tried a familysearch on 1880 on line and found 4 John Hacketts of about the right age living in NJ. At least two had Irish fathers. Other two were out on their own already, one in Millville, Cumberland co; the other Middletown, Monmouth co.
I suggest you look up the 1900 next and try to find more info.
If John W is telling the truth, his Hacketts have been in USA since before 1845.
