Hi Steve,
My name is spelt with the ck but on my father's birth certificate, although
I have not seen it yet, his name was registered as James Francis Halkett.
His Father Michael just made a mark where the signature was required, so
presumably he could not read or write so would have no knowledge of which
spelling was correct in his case.
He was born in Dundee Scotland which is in the county of Angus (known in
those days as Forfarshire}which is the adjacent county to Fife on the North
side of the river Tay.
My dad was born in 1891 and was the only boy in a family of twelve. I believe
he was the youngest. His father Michael and his mother Mary Murphy had
emigrated to Scotland from Ireland. There was a boom going on at the time
in Dundee to do with the Jute industry and the population had a high content
of Irish immigrants.
I just thought that with the proximity of the counties there might be some
connection. I was born in Dundee in 1940 but now live in British Columbia
Canada.
Best of Luck in your research.
Clay
