William Hackett
I have information from his grave marker in Forreston, IL which is in
Ogle County and some from the articles in the History of Ogle County. I
also have information from some researchers in England. But I can't figure
out when he came to the U.S. even after requesting several ship manifests for
most ports for the time periods that make sense.
William Hackett is buried in the Forreston Cemetery in northwest
Illinois. The grave marker indicates that he was born in Burbage,
Leicestershire on March 12, 1815 and died March 16, 1864. A note in the
History of Ogle County about Clara Hackett, his wife, indicates that he was
born in 1816. It further tells that located in Jefferson County, Ohio in 1844
and later in Ogle County in 1854. According to the Ralph Hackett Family
History, by Uncle Shirley Hackett, William had one cousin in America, Thomas
Collins who was a railroad engineer and lived at Eagle Grove, Iowa, We have a
picture of him that I received from my Aunt (Elsie Rownes Way).
After some exchanges with someone on the Internet I eventually found my
way to a copy of the baptism entry of a William Hackett son of Thomas and Ann
on April 1818 in the Parish of Burbage in Leicestershire England in a
ceremony performed by Reverend J. Dyke. The copy also shows that Susanna,
the daughter of Thomas and Ann was also baptized on the same day. If William
did not have a sister Susanna, then I will be able to show that this is not
the record of my William.
If this is my William, then his father Thomas married Ann Hurst Dec. 12,
1807 in Burbage. A search of the IGI found other baptisms including Ann
(2/20/1810) and John 21/6/1812) in Hinckley Wesleyan Methodist. And Eliza
(1/4/1816) and Susannah (1/4/1818) in Burbage. So Susannah and William could
be twins or there was simply a delay in Williams's baptism. It is not
clear that the Hinckley baptisms are his brother and sister.
The family seems to think William may have come from England to Maryland.
Does that sound right to anyone?
Claretta Marker Hackett
Clara Marker Hackett and William Hackett were married by William Eaton
in Jefferson Co. in 1852 according to their marriage certificate. According
to an Internet exchange, Rev. William Eaton replaced Rev. Joseph Kerr on Oct.
21, 1844 as pastor of the Two Ridge Presbyterian Church on the Steubenville
and Richmond Pike. They had six children, Thomas R., Mary J., George B.,
Lemuel I., F. Ralph (our Fredrick) and Abbie H. Mrs. Hackett at one time
owned 360 acres of land, beautifully located, and kept in a high state of
cultivation under her own personal supervision. She was making expensive
improvements to her already valuable farm which was worth about $20,000 at
the time according to the Ogle County history. I need to read the history
carefully to determine what time the history is referring to.
We don't have much history from Clara's side of the family. We know that
she was born in 1824 either in Lancaster Co., PA, according to a copy of one
family history notes and in Somerset County, PA, according to her grave
marker in Forreston. She died in Forreston in 1899 according to her marker
and in 1898 according to family notes. According to the same family notes,
her father John Marker was born at Reading, PA and died in Steubenville,
Ohio. Her mother Mary Eire died in Nelsenville, Ohio. They are both burred
at Two Ridge Meeting House in Nelsenville, Ohio.
After a look at my info it seems to me that I have the following:
Claretta Marker was the daughter of John Marker and Mary Erie. I have
information about the siblings from two sources:
1st source other info
Peter Peter
Sarah Sarah
James
John John
Daniel Daniel
Israel Israel
Mary (possibly Claretta) Claretta (born either 1823 or 1824)
Isiah
Credilla
The families seem very close to each other. A Linda Simmons who runs the
Marker Listserve sent me information. Her information shows a John Marker b
1779 in Brothersvalley Twp. who was Baptized in 1780. She thought that there
might be a link to our Claretta and her family. That is, John might be her
father. The info she sent started with George Marker in Germany and listed
two additional generations. It stopped with John. I will follow up with her
to see if she has more about her John Marker.
So, we don't know much. I have a copy of the 1850 census for Jefferson
County which shows William Hackett, 30 yrs. I have written the National
Archives for copies of ship passenger arrival records and they have not found
him in:
Boston 1848-1891
Philadelphia 1800-1906
Baltimore 1820-1897
New York 1820-1846
Other Hacketts in Illinois
Others buried in Forreston, IL are Clara Marker Hackett, George Hackett
their son (b Jefferson Co., Ohio 3/31/1857; d 2/8/1899) and daughter Hanna
Addie Hackett b 1862, d 1934).
Help
Would appreciate information or ideas about tracking down how and when
William Hackett came to the U.S. and information about Clara (Claretta)
Marker Hackett's family.
