Here's what I have for you. Pages89, 90, 91 and 92 , re, "The Identity of
Joanna, wife of William HASKINS". See the New England Historical
Genealogical Register, Vol. 117. "The Identitity of Joanna {she is a
HACKETT}, wife of William(5) Haskins and later of John(6) Eddy of New
Salem, MA" by Frederick C. Warner of No. Amherst, MA "The HOSKINS
Genealogist" compiled by Georege Ely Russell, no. 6. July 1959, p. 33
shows the ancestry of WILLIAM(1) HOSKINS of Plymouth, MA and his wife ANN
HINDS. The name was later spelled HASKINS.
The will of Wm. Haskins of New Salem, MA dated 1 Jan 1790-1 and probated
9 May 1798 bequearthed to wife Mary; to sons Joseph, Paul, GEORGE and
Shadrack the priviledge of "my blacksmith shop and tools"; to Anna Hoar
20 acres in Wendell, MA where her husband Shadrack Hoar lately lived; to
dau. Abigail Bradley's children; to dau. Hopestill King; to dau. Sarah
Booth's heirs "my right in a certain Island lying in a pond called Long
Pond in the town of MIDDLEBOROUGH in the County of Plymouth"; to grandson
Peter Achorn; to son Silias' children; to grandson GEORGE HASKINS; to
daughter-in-law JOANNA EDDY "the use and improvement of that place I
purchased of Jesse Thayer lying in New Salem during the term of her
natural life"; to grandson William Haskins "that place I bought of Jesse
Thayer after the decease of his Mother," he to pay his brother John 12
pounds and 20 shillings to each of his sisters; son Jonathan Executor
(Hampshire County Probate, vol. 20, pg. 188).
These records show that William(4) Haskins had a son who died before
1790, leaving a widow JOANNA, sons William and John and several daus.,
and that the WIDOW JOANNA had married again a man named EDDY. In her "The
EDDY Family in America", 1930, Pg. 167, Ruth S.D. EDDY shows that JOHN(6)
EDDY (Jabez5-4, Obadiah3, Samuel2, William1), born in Middleborough, MA
26 Nov 1733; married first, 6 Dec 1757, Ruth Hayford and secondly,
"before 1792, JOANNA HASKINS, a widow who died 6 Nov 1839, ae. 100 years,
1 month." But these {particular} records do not show the maiden name of
JOANNA (HASKINS) EDDY nor the given name of her HASKINS husband.
William(5) HASKINS born prob. in Berkley, MA about 1739; died in West
Point, N.Y., 11 July 1780; m. in Middleborough, MA in October 1758,
JOANNA HACKETT, b. abt. 1739, d. in New Salem, MA in Nov. 1839 ae. 100
yrs. 1 mo. She married 2nd in New Salem, MA in Dec. 1785, John(6) EDDY
who d. 24 Mar 1806 (U.S. Pension #W-14674). {W=Widow).
Wm(5) HASKINS of New Salem and Pelham, MA, enlisted as a private on 1 Sep
1775 for three years in the Continenal Army. His name appears in pay
accounts for service from 17 Jan 1777 to 31 Dec 1779 as a private in
Capt. Daniel Shay's Co., Col. Rufus Putnam's (5th) Reg., Cont. Army
(Mass. Soldiers and Sailors of the Rev. War, vol. 7, pg. 372 (under
HARSKIN) [sic] pg. 456 (Under HASKINS).
On 4 Nov 1783 JOANNA HASKINS, widow, was appointed admin. of the estate
of Wm. HASKINS late of Pelham, deceased (Hampshire County Probate, Vol.
14, pg. 155).
On 22 June 1837 JOANNA EDDY of New Salem, aged 98 years, applied for a
pension on account of her former husband WILLIAM HASKINS, a blacksmith.
Among other things hertofore mentioned, she deposed that she m. HASKINS
in Middleborough Oct. 1758 and that she married again in New Salem Dec.
1785 JOHN EDDY, who d. 1806. JOANNA EDDY'S sister-in-law, MARY (Smith)
HASKINS, aged 96 yrs. (widow of Joseph Haskins, brother of William),
deposed that she knew WILLIAM HASKINS in Middleborough and that he
married there in Oct. 1758 JOANNA HACKETT of Middleborough who later m.
JOHN EDDY. JOANNA (HASKINS) EDDY'S daughter JOANNA, wife of EBENEZER
VAUGHN of New Salem also deposed.
On 28 April 1840 William Whitaker deposed that JOANNA EDDY, a pensioner
of the US, died in New Salem 6 Nov 1839 and that JOANNA VAUGHN of New
Salem, PHEBE DUTTON of Ludlow, MA (near Springfield, MA) and ANNA SHAW of
Prescott, MA were the only living children of the deceased (Franklin
County Probate #1439).
"THEREFORE, the wife of WILLIAM(5) HASKINS and JOHN(6) EDDY, both of New
Salem, was JOANNA HACKETT of Middleborough, MA.
It is believed JOANNA HACKETT was the daughter of SAMUEL HACKETT of
RAYNHAM, MA who m. in Bridgewater, MA 23 Sep 1736 JOANNA WASHBURN.
SEE: New England Historical Genealogical Register, Vol. CXVII and V.R.'s
of Bridgewater and Middleboro, MA.
This Samuel Hackett is a descendant of JABEZ(1) HACKETT, first of Lynn
{Salem}, MA who removed to Taunton, MA 1656.
In the Carver, MA V.R.'s, pg. 105 there is a GEORGE HACKET (int. were of
Middleborough) marrying Zilpah (Zilpha) Coggeshall 23 Feb 1792.
There was a GEORGE HACKETT, b.; m. 13 Jan 1723/4 to LYDIA THOMAS, who was
the son of JOHN and ELEANOR (GARDNER) HACKETT of Taunton, MA. Their
children were: SARH HACKETT who m. ELIAKIM RICHMOND; GIDEON HACKETT, m.
BETTY SAMSON and LYDIA HACKETT, m. JOHN HALL. May have been others?
There was a GEORGE HACKETT, b. 28 Jan 1759 in Middleboro, MA; m. 23 Feb.
1792 to Zilpha SHAW; d. 15 Oct 1848. She was b. 1857 and must have been
her 2nd m. as she is the same Zilpha as Zilpha Coggeshall. GEORGE was the
son of ELIJAH and PRUDENCE (RICHMOND) HACKETT, and ELIJAH was the son of
JOHN and ELEANOR (GARDNER) HACKETT. This is a "Mayflower" connection
through PRUDENCE RICHMOND'S line. These are all of Middleboro, MA and all
go back to JABEZ(1) HACKETT.
SAMUEL HACKETT who m. 23 Sep 1736 JOANNA WASHBURN was the son of SAMUEL
HACKETT and MARY (CANE) HACKETT. The other children of SAMUEL and MARY
(CANE) HACKETT were: EBENEZER HACKETT who m. thrice, 2nd to ABIGAIL
THOMAS and 3rd to BETTY CANEDY (don't know who 1st wife was); ANNA
HACKETT m. SHSDRACK WILLBORE and MARY HACKETT m. JACOB HOSKINS. Some born
in Taunton, some in Middleboro, MA.
This should give you some thoughts as to where to go next or whatever.
