O.K. yes, you are most diffinately on the right track. First let me
indicate that in Exeter, NH where Colonel James Hackett had a Mansion,
lots of land and his docks where he built the hulls of ships to be
floated up river to Portsmouth, NH where they were outfitted, lived there
in Exeter, NH with his 1st wife Joanna Gilman, dau. of Dr. Josiah and
Abigail (Coffin) Gilman, and James Hackett, jr. was born there and whom I
go through. Colonel James Hackett was a prolific shipbuilder and became a
Naval Constructor during the Rev. War in Portsmouth, NH where he was the
Masterbuilder of 9 ships. I have some of the National Archives papers on
one of his ships, re, the "Cresent". He m. 2nd Mary Webster, after the
death of Joanna in 1774, Mary Webster was the dau. of Rev. Samuel and
Elizabeth (Whiting) Webster. She of Concord, NH and he and family of
Salisbury, MA. James Hackett, Sr. was born at Amesbury, MA 29 Nov 1739.
He m.3rd the widow Mrs. Elizabeth (Hill) Hodge March of 1790 at
Newmarket, NH. after the death of Mary. Widow Elizabeth was the widow of
Ensign Samuel Hodge, Jr. who died aboard the vessel "Raleigh", which was
built by Col. James Hackett and is depicted on the NH State Flag. The
Hodges had four children, and one was Elizabeth Hodge, Jr. who m. James
Hackett, Jr. in Kittery, ME 1799.

Col. James Hackett also owned a 350 acre farm and a tavern in Brookfield,
NH as an investment and was managed by Hiram Hodge son of Ensign and
Elizabeth (Hill) Hodge. Another son, John Hodge, Esq. m. Mary Stevens and
they both died in BROOKFIELD, NH also, as did James and "Betsey" (Hodge)
Hackett, Jrs., and the widow Mrs. Elizabeth (Hill) (Hodge) Hackett and
William Hackett who m. Elizabeth Thurston and he was a half brother of
James Hackett, Jr., he being the son born to Col. James Hackett's 2nd
wife Mary Webster. James Hackett, Jr. was the sole Executor of his
father's will. The Colonel d. at Kittery, ME 1802 leaving huge holdings.
I have the will. He had 8 children. 5 were girls and I have all their
husband's lines also.

James(4) Hackett, Sr., b. 1739 was the son of John(3) and Mary (Kelly)
Hackett, who was the son of William(2) and Hannah (Young) Hackett, who
was the son of William(1) and Sarah (Barnard) Hackett of Salisbury, MA.
Sarah was b. there in 1643 and was the dau. of Capt. Thomas Barnard one
of the first 18 settlers of Salisbury, MA, he having arrived from England.

However, we have the problem of another William Hackett who was of Dover,
NH and arrived there about 1654 and had land grants until he sold to
Thomas Hanson in 1659. We know he was m. to Mary Atkins, dau. of Thomas
Atkins who had ten daughters. We also know he had another wife by the
name of Margaret as shown in his will of 1685. Now, Capt. William Hackett
who m. Sarah Barnard had a will in 1714. There is more, but would take a
lot to type it all out here.

Now in this line of Hacketts there was an Allen Hackett, b. 1777 at
Gilmanton, NH who m. Mary Young. He was son of Jeremiah and Polly
(Robinson) Hackett all of Canterbury, NH. Most of Allen's male
descendants all became famous lawyers in Portsmouth, NH, and the female's
(some) m. into famous Naval families like Truxton and others. One of
these descendants in this line became the Ass't. Secretary of Navy in
1901. They all go back to Capt. William(1) and Sarah Hackett who by the
way were married 1666/7 in Salisbury, MA. {My contention and GUESS is
that someday we'll find the relationship of the two William Hacketts of
Dover, NH and Salisbury, MA respectively who may be father and son, and
may even be brother and nephew of Jabez(1) Hackett of Taunton, MA who
came to Lynn, MA in 1644 via an old "soap boiler", then Jabez removed to
Taunton, MA in 1656 and started the numerous Hackett clans from him}.
Taunton is near Rehoboth, MA. In fact I bank there. I'm now from Taunton,
MA, Bristol County. Most of the Mayflower Hackett descendants, if not
all, are from Jabez(1) Hacketts through wives.

There was an earlier Allen(4) Hackett, b. 1758 son of Ephraim(3) and
Dorothy (Allen) Hackett. Ephraim m. 1734 in Salisbury, MA. Sons Hezekiah
Hackett and his brother Ephraim Hackett, Jr. were of Tamworth, NH in
Carroll County. Ephraim(3) and Dorothy (Allen) had 13 children.
Ephraim(3) Hackett, Sr. was the son of Ebenezer(2) and Hannah (Ring)
Hackett, and he was son of Capt. William(1) and Sarah (Barnard) Hackett.
See Hoyt's "The Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury, MA". It has all
the known early genealogies of Allens and Hacketts and many others. Over
900 pages.

So you are on the right track and if you ask Howard Johnston at
<> our Hackett Family Data Base Chairman and Editor of the
Hackett Monitor, I sense he would give you a print out of the line(s) of
which you speak in a much better format than what I have related here. He
has all the right genealogical programs to do this, and he is also a
descendant of William(1) and Sarah(Barnard(2) Hackett. Anyway, he does
have all this info. Most if not all of your searchings could be answered
through Howard, and I'm sure if you have info we don't already have of
later Hacketts, he'd like to have those. My very best,

Gary I.(10) Hackett from William(1) Hackett of Salisbury, MA.
