In response to Howard Johnson's Information about Nelson Hackett of KY:
Thanks for the additional information. My ancestor Daniel O'Hara (Harrah,
Harrow) had a will in Clark Co., KY probated Jan. 26, 1795.
He names his living children, James, Charles, William, Daniel Jr. [my line],
John, and Sarah. He also has L 5. bequests to all of his grandchildern
named Daniel. There is also a bequest to Daniel, the son of Nelson and
Elizabeth Hackett.
I know from records that Nelson Hackett was a neighbor of the Harrahs and
was a witness in many deeds, involved in common court cases, etc. but was
Elizabeth necessarily a Harrah? Maybe the Hacketts just named a son after
their neighbor and friend but weren't related. The will is the only mention
I have found of Elizabeth. Later records which mention the Hacketts refer
to Martha Hackett, formerly Yardley.
The Harrahs and Hacketts lived on Hingston Creek in what is now Bath Co.,
KY. When I found the War of 1812 record for a Daniel H. [the "H" for
Harrah?] Hackett and saw that he was born in Bath Co. in 1793, he fit the
bill for the Daniel Hackett named as a child in the will of Daniel O'Hara
(Harrah). In addition, one of his children had a middle name of Nelson.
I'm sure the information you sent is correct as far as Daniel being the son
of Nelson & Elizabeth Hackett.
The way Daniel O'Hara's will was written, I would think that Elizabeth
{Harrah} Hackett was deceased by 1795. I believe there is a record of
Nelson Hackett's marriage to Martha Yardley but I can't find it.
Additional Information about Nelson Hackett:
Nelson Hackett appears in Greenbrier Co., VA records:
1) Court of Wednesday 19 June, 1782: to Nelson Hacket 24 shillings for
riding express 4 days for this state.
2) Court of Saturday 22 March, 1783: Nelson Hackett on 2 juries with James
OHarra [his future brother in law?]
Also Gotliff vs. Thomas Hackett in a seperate case. [Thomas Hackett only
appears twice in Greenbrier Co. records, here and earlier, April 18, 1781,
George Dickson vs. Thomas Hackett in trespass asault and battery. I recall
seeing the name Thomas Hackett in earlier Botetourt Co. records. Perhaps he
is Nelson's father or brother.
3) Court of 18 May, 1784: Nelson Hackett on jury. James OHarra on jury same
day - different trials.
Then he disappears from records & may have gone to KY this early. Certainly
he shows up in Clark Co., Ky records by 1794 as have the Harrahs who were
all originally in Greenbrier, VA before moving to KY. Nelson Hackett was
appointed an undersheriff in Clark Co. in 1795 and appears with the Harrahs
in many court cases.
He lived on Hingston Creek which was Clark Co., then Montgomery Co. and
finally partly in Montgomery Co., partly in Bath Co.. In the book "Growing
up with the Co" about the Town of Mt. Sterling, he is listed in 1800 as one
of 83 citizens of the city and as possessing 2 slaves. He probably attended
nearby Springfield Presbyterian Church (founded 1794) which still stands.
Most of the Harrahs moved onto Indiana & Illinois except for James Harrah.
>From about 1807-1816, James Harrah and Martha Hackett were sued by a Ms.
Thomas in a land dispute. This indicates Nelson died before 1807. The
records of the court case pinpoint where Nelson Hackett built his cabin and
a house where Martha Hackett lived in 1815, all adjacent to Harrah land.
The land on which Martha Hackett lived was originally patented by William
Yardley who may have been her father.
Elizabeth Harrah was probably born in the 1750's-60's as were her brothers &
sisters and Nelson Hackett (appearing first in 1784) was probably born about
the same time. They may have had older children than Daniel H. Hackett.
In KY, the O'Haras were usually called Harrow in records, but the preferred
spelling of the family became Harrah and all but one branch used the name
Harrah up to the present day.
By the way, are you a descendant of the above family?
Regards,
Richard Bradley
