The prosperous town of Hackettstown, N.J. was named for Samuel Hackett.
The exact date of the first settlement is not known, but it was not far
from 1720. Samuel Hackett was the first settler of which there is any
record or tradition. He received ten thousand acres of land from his
father-in-law, who had large grants from the king of England. He was a
Judge of Morris county. About 1760 there were other settlements made and
were undoubtedly influenced to locate here by HACKETT, who was also an
Irishman. Some came down from VT some came from Ireland. NOW, SAMUEL
HACKETT had sons, one of whom was JACOB HACKETT who went to Canada and I
just sent the JACOB HACKETT line to Howard Johnston, our Data Base
Chairman and Editor of the Hackett Monitor and to others who were looking
for this JACOB HACKETT line.
