Re Word of the Week
Hi Hackett cousins
In my search for the exact origin of Tobias Hackett, our Newfoundland
progenitor, I looked "everywhere" - checked books, lists, census records,
wrote people, posted on the Internet etc. I knew he was from County
Tipperary and had been told he came from Killenaule, but could prove
nothing.
This summer I revisited Brigus in Newfoundland, where he had lived, and a
friendly student in the local museum remarked that all their cemeteries had
been read and passed me a folder which listed every gravestone. I was so
positive that Tobias would have no marker I almost refused to look!
There it was - Tobias Hackett, a native of Lanes Park, Co Tipperary. An
email to the Tipperary County Library received the reply that LANESPARK is
in the County of Tipperary South Riding; Barony of Slieveardagh; Parish of
Killenaule.
Talk about feeling foolish - all these years without making one trip to the
graveyard! The lesson - NEVER overlook the obvious.
