Hello, cousins.
My gggrandmother was Matilda HACKETT. In various places her name is spelled
Hockett/Hacket/Hoket. In 1823 she married my gggrandfather Torrence Culpepper
Conner in Jones Co. GA. She is listed on censuses as having been born in NC
between 1795 and 1800. In the 1820 census for Jones Co. GA there is a Serena
Hocket, age 50-60, a single female head of house. Since Matilda and Torrence
named their first daughter Serena, I have surmised that Matilda is the
daughter of Serena. Also in the 1820 census for Jones Co. there is an Edward
Hockett, male 16-26 head of house , with a female 16-26 and a male under 10.
An Ann Hackett married William Melton in Jones Co. in 1822.
There are various Hacketts in NC but one in particular in Wake Co. NC named
Edward Hocut in 1800 had the right ages and number of children to be the
father of Edward, Ann, and Matilda and husband of Serena. Matilda and
Torrence named their fourth son Edward John.
The last record of Matilda I have found is in the 1860 Henry Co. AL census
where she is living with her son Willis.
I hope someone else is researching this group. Julia
