DETROITERS LOST IN STEAMER COLLISION ON LAKE ERIE NEAR CLEVELAND,
OH 21 JUNE 1868

About 24 persons were lost or drowned when the steamer Morning Star
collided with the Bark Courtland about 30 miles from Cleveland. The
Star, scheduled to leave Cleveland at 9 pm, left about 10:30 pm carrying
40 passengers bound for Detroit. It was dark and rainy when it collided
with the Bark Courtland about 11 pm. Both boats sank. The Star sank in
about 15 minutes and the Bark in bout an hour. The Captain of the
Morning Star was E. R. Viger.
