This inquiry concerns a relative whose first name is spelled in several
ways. Udvilla Grant, born 1852 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, married
James Boutilier. She appears in census and church records as Eudvilla,
Udavla, and Noella, at least. Her husband died in 1912, and his death
certificate indicates that she was still living at that time. Her son
Arthur died in a mining accident in 1925, and she was no longer listed
in the obituary as surviving at that time. However, despite diligent
search, I can find no reference to her in the on-line death index for
Nova Scotia, which is (allegedly) complete for 1908 - 1957. As of 1925,
she had four children living in Boston: Charles, b. 1875; Peter Wilson,
b. 1877; Sarah Winifred, b. 1893 or 1894; and Ann, b. 1896. Ann's
married name is believed to have been House. Her sister's is not known.
There is a possibility that Udvilla migrated to Boston after the death
of her husband, to live with one of her children resident there.
Unfortunately, the 1921 Canadian census will not be available to the
public until at least 2013, so I am unable to check whether she was
still resident in Nova Scotia at that time. Any information which might
be available from the 1920 US census (or other sources) would be deeply
appreciated.
