Priscilla - you're confusing two different projects.
BYU project is scanning family histories books and the books are linked
in the catalog
The volunteer indexing - is named Family Search Indexing "FSI"
volunteers sign up and index the records such as death certificates,
marriage certificates and census records so they can be available for
free access linked to images of actual records.
One example is West Virginia's BMDs. I am one of the indexers.

Already done to my knowledge, Georgia, Ohio and Texas Death
Certificates. Preparations are already underway to get the images and
indexes online.
Volunteer Indexing sign up:

Already has over 30,000 volunteers and goal is 100,000 by end of the year.
