LEMUEL GUSTIN
Lemuel Gustin, b. July 29, 1823 Warren Co. OH is the oldest child of my
ggggf, Samuel Betts Gustin (Jeremiah Jr., Jeremiah, John, Augustine) &
Elizabeth Diltz, who moved from Warren Co. OH to Madison Co. IN about 1845.
Lemuel Gustin & his wife, Catherine Eleanor Noland were enumerated in the 1850
census for Madison Co. IN, p. 264 Union Twp. They had 2 girls: Nancy Ellen,
age 2, and Elizabeth, born that year.
Incidentally, Catherine Noland's brother, Stephen Adams Noland (1832-1867)
m. Bethany Dilts (1832-1907), dau/William & Jane Gustin Dilts of Madison Co.
IN.
From the material cited below, this appears to be Lemuel Gustin's
migration route.
In 1856 or 1859 Lemuel & Catherine Noland Gustin moved from Madison Co. IN to
Eliza Twp., Mercer Co. IL. In 1868 they moved to Ohio Grove Twp. where he
was a J. P. and a school director, as well as a farmer. By 1882 they had 6
children living, 2 deceased.
By the 1890's the family resided in Dakota, but then moved to Storm Lake,
IA (across the border from Mercer Co. IL). There, in 1898, his wife,
Catherine, died. Between 1900 and 1902 Lemuel Gustin moved to the state of
Washington. Where he died is still unknown. However, there is a tombstone
for him in IA with a death date of 1904.
Sources:
Lemuel Gustin's bio sketch in HISTORY OF MERCER AND HENDERSON COUNTIES,
H.H. Hill and Co., Chicago, 1882, states, in part:
"LEMUEL GUSTIN, farmer, son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Diltz) Gustin,
was born July 29, 1823. His parents settled in Madison county, Indiana,
about 1845, and there died. Lemuel was raised on the farm and inured to
all the toils and pleasures incident thereto. He is the oldest of eight
children. In 1847 he was married to Catharine Noland, daughter of Stephen
Noland. Her father, Stephen Noland .... and wife, Nancy E. (Adams), a native
of Ohio, lived in Madison county, Indiana, from 1823 to 1856, when they
settled in Mercer county, Illinois. .... In 1856 Mr. and Mrs. Gustin came
with the Nolands to Mercer county, Illinois, settling for a time in Eliza
township. In 1868 they purchased sixty acres in section 2, Ohio Grove
township, and have lived on it since. Mr. Gustin has been justice of the
peace; he has been school director six years. He has six
children living and two dead."
A sketch of Lemuel's brother, my gggf Isaac H. Gustin, pub. in
BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIRS OF HENRY COUNTY, INDIANA, B. F. Bowen, Logansport, IN
1902, states in part:
"Samuel B. Gustin, son of Jeremiah... married Elizabeth Diltz... Samuel B.
and his wife lived on the old Gustin place at Red Lion until 1845, at which
time they were the parents of six children, namely: Lemuel, who left his home
about the year 1859, lived in Illinois and Dakota several years, then at Storm
Lake, Iowa, and is now a resident of the state of Washington..."
I hesitate to cite to THE GUSTIN COMPENDIUM, published in the late 1890's.
For what it's worth, on p. 269 is a reference to Samuel Betts Gustin's family,
including:
"Lemuel, born 1822 [sic] near Red Lion; now living in South Dakota; married
---- Noland; children were all girls, except one boy who died young."
From 1900 Census, Buena Vista Co. IA:
Lemuel Gustin widowed, b. July 1823 age 76
From a book of cemetery inscriptions, Storm Lake Cem., Buena Vista Co. IA:
p.71 "Row 10

GUSTIN, LEMUEL birth: 7-29-1823 death: 3-24-1904

LEMUEL GUSTINE
There was a Lemuel Gustine in Storm Lake, IA, as well, about the same age
as Lemuel Gustin. He and wife Elizabeth apparently did not leave OH until
after the birth of son Bishop Simpson Gustine, who was b. OH May 1857 (see
1900 census, IA, Sac. Co. Eureka Twp.).
This family was enumerated in the 1870 census for Buena Vista Co., Storm
Lake Twp., IA, p. 605:
Gustine, Lemuel, 47 OH farmer
" Elizabeth 52 OH
" Johnathan S. 23 OH
" John E. 21 OH
" Simpson 12 OH
" Elizabeth 18 OH
They were enumerated in the 1885 Buena Vista Co., Storm Lake Twp., IA
Census:
#133, Gustine, Lem; block 25; age 62; male; married; occ. Laborer; b.
Ohio;
Gustine, Elizabeth; block 25; age 67; female; married; b. Ohio
From the WPA inventory project, Cemeteries of Buena Vista Co., IA:
GUSTINE, LEMUEL
birth: 5----1822 death: 12-25-1886
Storm Lake Cemetery, Storm L. - Storm Lake Twp.
(Birth- Ohio, Death-Storm Lake, IA.
father of John E., Mrs. Thomas Dabney of Livingston, Mont.,
J.S. of Selma, Cliff of Wyo., B.S. of Storm L.)
Was this Lemuel Gustine a son of Annie Rogers and John Gustin (son of
John Gustine & Mary Blair)?
Many thanks to Bill & Sandy Gustin for posting so much helpful research.
