Dorothy Dunn Griswold
Dorothy Dunn Griswold, 86, a lifelong Erie resident, died unexpectedly at her home on Wednesday evening November 26, 2008. She was born in Erie on March 13, 1922 a daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Harrison A. Dunn (Dorothy Moore Dennis). Dorothy attended Strong Vincent High School and graduated from Mercyhurst and the Jamestown Business School. An accomplished pianist and organist, she spent a lifetime studying and playing the piano and pipe organ. Following graduation from Mercyhurst, she received a scholarship to Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. There she studied organ under Professor Albert Riemenschneider in the Conservatory of Music. Well known for its Riemenschneider Bach Institute, it annually performs the second oldest Bach Festival in the nation (founded in 1932). In later years she skillfully performed Erie area organ concerts at St. Peter Cathedral, St. George Church, St. Patrick Church, and Luther Memorial Church. She especially enjoyed music composed by !
the great French and German organ composers such as Marcel Dupre, Charles Marie Widor, Cesar Franck, Louis Vierne, Saint-Saens, Faure, and J.S. Bach. Other accomplishments included learning and competing in the equestrian sport of Dressage, quilting, and painting. She worshipped at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Fairview and was an honorary member of the Erie Club. In past years she participated in Meals on Wheels and enjoyed the Erie Yacht Club and Kahkwa Club. Her gifts and contributions as a wife and mother were the most important part of her life. She was devoted to her husband, and was a mother who inspired and encouraged her children always. Survivors include three daughters, Susan C. Griswold of Virginia, Carolyn G. Dixon and her husband W. Randall Dixon of Utah, and Rebecca DuMars Griswold and her husband Antonio Caruso of New York; a son, George T. Griswold, Jr. and his wife Tracy Griswold of Louisiana;
two brothers, Dr. David D. Dunn of Erie
and Robert E. Dunn of Texas;
seven grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Lydia, Jamison, Aaron, Caroline, and Ian; seven great grandchildren, Alejandra, Alexander, Isabel, Peter, Paige, Nathaniel, and Claire; a number of nieces and nephews and her beloved dog Annie also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years George T. Griswold in 2000;
a brother, Harrison A. "Bert" Dunn in 1993;
a grandson, Mark Nichols Rung in 2004.
Friends will be received on Thursday afternoon December 4, 2008 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1070 Dutch Road, Fairview, from 1:00 p.m. until a Memorial Service there at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Fr. Geoffrey Howson presiding and co-presiding will be Rev. Dr. Donald Baxter, Assisting Clergy. Private burial for the family will be in Erie Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to VNA Hospice, 1305 Peach St., Erie, 16501 or St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1070 Dutch Road, Fairview, PA 16415.
