Subject: From the admin - please read - software changes for lists

Hello list members,
I just wanted to let you know Rootsweb is in the process of migrating to new
List Management software. You might have already received notice of this -
we were told everyone who is a ubscriber received a notice about August 11.
Lists are being migrated in steps; those lists with the initial letter of
G-I scheduled for Tuesday, J-L for Wednesday, and M-O for Thursday of this
upcoming week. The migrations will continue through the end of the month,
alphabetically.
What does this mean to you?
Not much except a possible delay of a few hours for messages (best case
scenario) - longer for worst case scenario. For some of you on the Digest
mode, your digest might look a little different (not those of you on AOL,
I'm told), but that can be changed.
And we've been told some on AOL are finding their list messages in their
Spam folders. Some of the lists have migrated to a new server, which AOL has
not yet whitelisted. So, if by any chance you are on AOL and you check your
spam folders and find list mail there, CLICK the *THIS IS NOT SPAM* link to
send the list mail to the AOL inbox. It is important to help train the
filters and let AOL know that this new server can be trusted. Unfortunately,
as administrators we do not know which mailing lists will be put on the new
server.
There will no need to resubscribe when the lists are migrated. You will
automatically be subscribed in whichever mode (List ("L") or Digest "D") you
are already on now. The biggest difference and maybe a drawback for some is
that you can no longer have a single email address subscribed to both "L"
and "D" modes (those currently on both will only be subscribed in the List
mode). If you wish to receive lists individually and on digest, you will
need a second email address. Apparently, being subscribed in two different
modes with the same email address was unique to Rootsweb list management
software (I know on the Yahoo lists I belong to, I need to make a choice).
No need to worry - this is really just a "heads up" message.
Apparently, Rootsweb has been "limping" along for years with a software that
worked, but which had been "tweaked" to its maximum capacity. This new
software, called "Mailman," has features that work more like Yahoo or other
mailing lists you might be used to, where you can actually go in and change
some of your settings, such as putting yourself on "No Mail" if you go on
vacation without unsubbing and then subscribing again when you return. Those
options won't be available immediately, but are forthcoming.
Thanks, list members. I will send another e-mail letting you know when your
list has been migrated.
