Helen,
I personally can't help you with the knowledge you seek about the
Isthmus of Panama, but I hope you will share any info you find with the
GOLDSEEKERS list - maps, general knowledge, etc. I don't think sharing that
info would detract from sales of a biography; if you think it would, let us
know about your book when it's published.
I, for instance, had 1 maternal from NY and 4 paternal from OH
ancestors go to CA for the Gold Rush; a 6th was born in a tollhouse in CA, my
grandmother. Of the 5, 1 almost certainly sailed around the Horn from NY, 2
came overland from OH by wagon, and I have some indications that the other 2
crossed the Isthmus.
