My father’s mother’s mother was a Lydia Gillingham. She was born in 1859 in Jersey, Channel Islands. She married a ship’s carpenter, Phillip John Fielding and had 7 children, Lydia and Violet (twins), Phillip, William, Florence (my grandmother), Gertrude and Cecilia. I believe her father was Samuel Gillingham, a mariner according to the 1861 Channel Island census (or ship’s captain according to my nan), born in England (nothing more specific). He was married to an Irish woman, possible from Lismore, named either Caroline or Katherine. My nan also said her mother had a sister known as Tottie who married a (Colonel?) Chris Gilbey and they had a son also Chris. She may also have had a brother Samuel and sisters called Ellen Jane and Mary Ann or Marion.
I wonder if these people are known to anyone. I have come to a halt in my research as I have no idea where Samuel came from. I thought he may have come from Dorset as there are sea connections between there and Jersey, but have been unable to find any links so he could have come from anywhere.
Any ideas gratefully received.
Cheers
Lesley
